Savi: I am from Sri Lanka and have been living in New Zealand for more than ten and a half years. I study Bachelor of Event Management with a minor of Creative Technology at Auckland University of Technology. My future goals are to study up to Masters in this field and maybe continue it to a Philosophy.

A Flaneur Apparatus of Experimental Visualization : Conceptual Statement

To start of the project we had few ideas about how our product going to look alike. We thought of looking at the urban life style in a different way, as in look at the city as an animal or from the sky like a birds eye view.

First we thought of making a dog and putting a string on to it and drag around the city. the dog sees the world in black and white. The angle the dog sees the world is very low wangle therefore it will give the effect of an animal.

We also tried to make our project to look like a spider. We were going to make a track which will fit any wall. A cart will be on top of the track and on top of the cart the camera will be placed. When we pull and push the camera on the track it will look like a spider crawling on the walls of the urban building. The audience will see the urban life style in a higher angle.

Another idea that we came up with was attaching a camera in to a plane. We realized it wouldn't be easy because we don't know how to make a plane therefore we have to buy a remote control plane. We gave up on this idea because of these issues. We also thought to concentrate on a more unique idea.

Human Interaction

Conceptual Statement

I had few troubles when I started this project. I didn’t have a clear idea of what I have to do and what I have to make to overcome this challenge. I had to do a fare bit of research about this topic to know what exactly what I have to do. This project starts with a keyboard hack which I thought would be interesting but I am not very good at soldering therefore this made me very uncomfortable from the start of this project. This was a challenge for me therefore I enjoyed that challenge. After finishing the soldering it limited my thoughts and completely changed my views about the project because I can only use the keyboard hack.

My idea for this project was showing emotions and feeling through an artistic way. I got this influence from animations. I used LED lights to create art and show emotions and feeling to the audience. I had some trouble when it came to programming the LED lights to respond to the buttons. The MAX 5 software always crashed when I tried to program my buttons as a result I had to limit the programs that I use. I only used three buttons in my project and these three buttons start and stop the movie in the screen and also control the LED lights therefore I needed more programs to operate these functions, but unfortunately I had to limit these programs because of MAX 5 program always crashed.

As I approach to my final step of my project I had to find an appropriate costume to my project. It should be a costume that represent the product and that it relates to what I do. As my costume I got a really old shirt and made holes in it so I can fix the LED light in to the holes. After I fixed everything into the shirt it was hard to wear because of the wires inside the shirt. To avoid these wires I had to duck tape the wires from inside therefore they won’t get messy and tangled when I put on the shirt.

At the end I am really satisfied of my product outcome. It’s how I wanted to be. It would be much better if I can use more programs in MAX 5 software but I managed to get most out of the software. In the future I will make it more reliable and add more options to make it more interesting.

Drawing Robot

Our robot is based on the mobile game called snakes, which tries to eat all the apples on its way. In our concept the robot is the snake and we specifically made a board that almost simulates the game in the mobile. Our original idea was the game of touch rugby but we had to change it due to the touch censor not responding very quickly and programming the robot is more advance and complicated.

When we started this project as a group we had lots ideas of how to present our drawing project with creativeness. We began to analyze every idea that we came up with, but we were limited with the equipment therefore we had to restrict our creativity. One of the major problems that we as a group came across was that we thought that this drawing should be on paper, but later we realized that we can go beyond and explore new ways of art. By the time we realized it, we were too late therefore we decided to work on our current robot.

We encountered more problems when we were programming the robot, especially with the colour sensor and the touch sensor. They didn’t meet our expectations until the end of the project. I personally had issues with the Lego mindstorme when I tried to program the robot to respond to the touch sensor. As a group we changed our ideas several times throughout the this project but at the end we decide to work on a very basic idea.

Situation Shuffle

As the tracker I had to record every movement of the actuator and collect the direction cards of the controller. Difficulties that I had were marking accurate and clear information on to the map about actuators progress. This role made me bit uncomfortable and challenging because I never have or had recorded information of any progress, usually goes straight in to the job. But it gave me a different way of approaching a goal.

I guess the hardest part that we faced as a group was, how to edit our stop motion video with effects and creativity. For stop motion video getting all the photos into the right order and adding effects took us about three to four hours. Lots of discussions were made about finding a beat that helps the stop motion to synchronize with the beat of the song.

Some of the technical problems that we had with the computer restricted our group’s creativity therefore we had to approach our goal in a simpler way.

July 22nd : Audio Culture

We had to present our piece of composing on Friday. Our group was really proud of what we have done. From this exercise we learn that sound is not only music it is also noise.

In this presentation different people have taken different approaches to their piece. Most of the people expressed their personality by their piece.

I really enjoyed this doing this exercise and it was really interesting. It is an different approach to sound.

July 21st : Audio Culture : First project

We were struggling to find a theme for our project in the start. While we were thinking Zoe came into our group and told us "don't think about the paint brush, think about the paint". This is the concept that we took to explore our idea.

This piece of art is representing noises at a construction site or a work station.
Our first experimental project for semester 2 is to explore different sounds and use them in a creative way.

This composition have all the noises that normally we would hear in a construction site. We tried to make these sounds hear as in part of the nature.

For example : This composition starts with a nice sound of a sea coming in to the shore but actually it is a sound of a woodcutter.

Smester 2 : Audio Culture : Lecture 1

First 2 days of this project we were introduced to sound. We went for a walk around the city to listen different sound that we have in this environment. I actually noticed lots of sounds that I didn't noticed in day today basis but those sounds were their whole time.

We were given a piece of paper to record sounds that we hear. We also have to write if its methodical, rhythmical or noisy and also write if we like that sound or not. This exercise is for broadening our ears to listen to unique sounds around the environment.

We also visited the audio rooms in Auckland University. Which was very interesting how audio is used inside the rooms

A Flaneur Apparatus of Experimental Visualization : Critique

This project is called " A Flaneur Apparatus of experimental Visualization". As I understood this project we have to explore the urban life style in a different way. For this project I was given the role of the CAD(Computer Aided Design). I was happy to get this responsibility because I have used 3D application such as "Maya" before therefore I was excited to get this role.

To start of I haven't worked with " Solid Works" 3D software before. The tutorials that I had in AUT didn't help me that much because the tutorials were very fast therefore I had to rome around 2 to 3 hours inside the software to get familiar with the components. I prefer "Maya" than "solid Works". I think "Maya"
is very easy to use.

As a group we had lots of ideas but we were struggling it to take to the next step. At the end all of our ideas look similar to other ideas. This made more difficult for us to pick the best idea. After deciding to take one of the ideas further we had the problems of how to show the purpose of this model. Question raised such as " why we made it?" and " what is the knowledge that the audience going to get through this idea?". These hurdles lead us to do a basic idea but we are happy with what we have done.

After coming up with the model we thought about the idea and what kind of data we are going to show the audience. what really troubled me is that we have to record a video while taking the data of the recorded video. These two activities should be done at the same time. This made me uncomfortable because I couldn't think how to do it. eventually I understood what we have to do and came up with a program that takes photos which will take the average color from the photo and present the color as the picture. Making the program for this was the difficult bit. We made it in MAX5 software and had to do more research about the MAX5 program to build our "color photo program.

Another problem that I encountered in this project was that getting the measurements right in " Solid Works" therefore the fabricators can work on the model. I had to redefine four times the CAD drawings because of incorrect measurements.

We did fair bit of research about robots and how they behave. We also studied how robots take data of a picture therefore we used the same theory for making our program which is changing a photo in to a color. We used research sources such as " Wikipedia", "TED" technology website, and the AUT database to help us to take this idea further.

A Flaneur Apparatus for Experimental Visualization : June 6th to June 14th

During this week we experimented our robot. We took it around the city to gather data and to see how it works. On the experiment the robot stopped time to time but this didn't distract our experiment.

After the experiment we noticed that the batteries were melted.
The plastic that holds the batteries have melted and the batteries are leaking as well. After this the robot didn't work. Then we bought new batteries and a new battery holder after that the robot worked again but the battery holders were melting as we experimenting.

This stopped us from experimenting further.

A Flaneur Apparatus for Experimental Visualization : June 1st to June 6th

By end of this week we finished making the robot. Now we only have to program the robot to take photos and travel by its own.

In our group the programmer was Alishia. She programmed the robot to go front and turn 360 degrees taking photos. We removed the current motherboard in the remote control car and fixed a Adrino board on to the robot to achieve this.

Kitty and Shams were our fabricators. they also had some problems with the measurements therefore they had to change few measurements so the design will fit the remote control car. They also found that some metals can't be weld in, therefore they had to solder some metals into other metals.

By this week we have changed our whole idea of the spider. We thought it would be hard to make. I think this was our groups week point. We backed out from an excellent idea.

then we chose to do a robot that goes around the city taking photos and taking the average color of the photo and turning it in to a picture. For the robot we thought of taking a remote control car and place a webcam on top if it.

I had the responsibility of designing the robot. Before I start to design it I researched how a robot look like and how they behave.

At the end of the week I finished designing the robot and we proceed to make it.

A Flaneur Apparatus for Experimental Visualization : 12th May to 20th May

During this week as a group we discussed what we want to do and what we want to present. We thought of ideas that can be shown by our product. Each person in our team came up with their own ideas and we all tried to combine our all ideas in to one idea.

As our first design we thought of looking at the urban lifestyle in an animals perspective. We thought of making a spider that crawls along the walls in the city and collecting data. This was our basic idea therefore we agreed to proceed with this idea.

Also this week we started researching about spiders and how they behave.

Got an appropriate costume for the project and fixed the lights and the keyboard hack in to the shirt. Made the Final Programs that I need for the project in MAX 5. I had some problems with MAX 5 software. The software always crashed therefore I couldn't use lot of programs in one patch

Soldered the buttons in to the LED lights therefore I can control the lights from the buttons and also started my programming in MAX 5

Worked with the keyboards and soldered the wires in to the keyboard. also tried to solder buttons int o the wire and assign keys in to each button

A Flaneur Apparatus of Experimental Visualization : Research 2 : What is a Robot

To a certain extend this project is about uniqueness and coming up with a story or an idea for your project. our group thought of making our model look like a robot. This raised the question " what is a robot".

I had to do more research for this because most of us don't know the true meaning of a robot. Research suggest that "a robot should not only pay attention to obstacle avoidance and goal seeking, it should also take into account whether it interferes with other people or robots" by Lam, Chi-Pang and colleagues.

These research notes made us look at our project more closely. we programmed our robot to take pictures and take the average color of the picture and turn it into a photo. Still we had problems because when the robot reaches a object it doesn't avoid it and continue its journey. This will prove that our model is not a robot but as a group we tried our best to make it look like a robot from the help of MAX5 program.

A Flanuer Apparatus of Experimental Visualization : Research 1 : Weight and Speed

For this project our obsession was weight. We are using a remote control car to move the camera around the city. There two boxes that will be set on top of the car. The main box is protecting the adrino board and on top of the main box another box will be placed for the camera.

Al this means weight for the remote control car. To minimize this I did bit of research. Study proves that " 1% decrease in body weight will lead to a 1% improvement in your race time. For example : by losing 7.5lb (a 5% reduction both race time and body weight)". this also been followed by athletes " thinness can actually be detrimental to your performance" by Megan Kretz.

After researching I realized we have to use the thinnest and the lightest metal as possible. If we use heavy metal the weight will slow down the car and this will cause the car to take more energy.

A Flaneur Apparatus for Experimental Visualization : Design Critique

There were many problems before we started to make our product. As a group we thought about the design and how it should look rather than the idea of how people see the urban life style differently. We developed our final idea based on our first idea which was making a spider.

We explored different aspect of designs from animals to remote control planes but finally we ran out of time therefore we thought of making a basic design and make it look like a robot. We struggle to make it and operate it like a robot. robot is a object that can do mostly anything without human interaction and our robot can only travel forward. As a group we tried our best to make our project look like a robot.

What our robot does is that it goes around the city. It takes pictures around the city. then it will convert the average color of the picture in to a photo. The data will show what kind of light we humans mostly live in. This study will mainly help companies who are making sunglasses therefore they can make appropriate sunglasses that will suit the light.

Reverse Cinama : 5th April to 8th of April

Last 3 days we did all the editing. as the music composer I completed all the tracks and gave it to Nick by 7th of April to finalize it in to the movie.

There are three audio tracks. Two of the track are my own tracks. I made it my self by playing in my keyboard and using a software called Mixcraft 5. These track basically in C , B , D, F , Am, Dm codes.

Reverse Cinama : 1st April to 5th April

These 4 days we shot missing parts of the film to bring more clarity to the movie. There were some shots that we recorded earlier that didn't meet our satisfaction therefore we re shot them as well in this time period.

Reverse Cinama : March 29th to 1st of April

The next four days after finishing the Cemetery scene we decided to shoot the action and the introduction scene.

For introducing the characters we we decided to shoot where the characters playing poker and the camera pans across the poker table introducing everyone. This was done at Ruebans house in Avondale

The action scene also taken in a side street in Avondale.

All of these shots have been taken at night time to show the fear to the audience.

Reverse Cinama : March 27th to 29th

First three days of our shooting we started of with the cemetery scene which took us three days to shoot. It took us longer because everyone in our group came up with ideas of where the the camera should be and how it should be acted out, therefore we went outside the script and our storyboard for a bit but at the end it worked out.

Reverse Cinama : 27th of March to 5th of April

By 27th of March we have done our research and each of us new what our roles are therefore we started our shooting.

our new project is Reverse Cinema where we have to interpret and add our own thoughts for a story. The first five days we assigned roles for each person in the group.

These were our roles therefore for the first five days of the assignment we researched about our roles in the movie and gathered information that we need to reach our goal.

Drawing Robot ; Friday 18th March

Friday we tested our Robots drawing and as you can see in the picture the Robot successfully drew a picture. As a group we're going to develop it more and make it more unique and eye catching, for now we're happy with our outcome.

As you can see we're continued to make the board on the following day also . Joseph is cutting out some red papers to go around the board as a outline therefore the robot do not wonder of the drawing board. Nick is sticking yellow papers that will guide the robot and help it draw different shapes along the board

We had to make a board for the robot to travel and draw in. In here as you can see we are preparing our selves to make a board with different colored paper.

We finished making the robot. The only thing that we had to do was program it to draw and interact with the group
